Laserstein is emerging as an important woman artist in Germany between the wars. We should consider her as a documentary painter who examined the hopes of feminism before its destruction by the Far Right. Sitting Model (c1943), Portrait (nd) & Portrait (nd)
Harry Clarke is one of Ireland’s greatest artists. His medium was stained glass. He prepared exquisite studies for his work. Here is one such I have ‘digitally restored’ https://t.co/wglJbmMyj6
I’m a lover not a fighter! And this week I turned 52. The things I’ve learnt about growing older is that time travels faster as you age. Another thing is that life is about love, hope & joy. I’ve created a promotion to share happy memories
The great Dick King Smith was born on this day & would have been 100y old & there are lots of celebrations! .@DickKingSmith https://t.co/cr8Ri11WK0
Thread: Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941) was a key Expressionist painter in Germany & a central figure in Der Blaue Reiter. He died on this day. A cosmopolitan artist I love the colour he uses as well as the spirituality of his late work.
Thread: I used to think Art is Emotion. But I realised, after a lot of thought, that Art is Spiritual Emotion.
By Spiritual I mean a power greater than oneself. Not just God sitting on her cloud having a giggle.
Great art is Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Kollwitz or Rego
Scattered through Raeburn’s work are a number of paintings of children. He treats these young sitters with empathy & respect. It is his mark as an artist of genius. The Drummond Children (1808), Hugh Hope (1810) & The Binning Children (1811)
A sign of Putin’s barbarity to destroy a museum in #Ukraine. Especially one which celebrates the joyous art of Maria Prymachenko. Here are a few of her works (random examples not from the museum AFAIK) .@UNESCO must intervene with Putin https://t.co/zzMQaunLOh
In painting the Madhouse there is a real sense that Goya worried that this might be where he would end up. The Young Ones (1812-14), Mariano Goya (his grandson, 1812-4), Duke of Wellington (1812) & The Madhouse (1812-4)
His two portraits of Zarate show his fascination with the actress. The aloof & sophisticated 1805 work is an essay in subtle colours. Doña Antonia Zárate (1805 & 1810-11), Water Carrier (1810-12) & Doña Narcisa Baranana de Goicoechea (1810)
