Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647), Italian artist, was born on this day. A Baroque painter, his work is not as well known as it should be. His two major masterpieces are in the National Gallery of Ireland.

Art’s dad worked as an agent for the Anglican Archbishop of Cashel (that was a serious connection in 18th C Ireland) & he & his son were left £100 by the Right Reverend, which they rapidly invested in the black stuff, opening a brewery (1755) in Leixlip on the River Liffey.
