His work also included biblical & mythological subjects. Even here the male form & gay gaze documented his imaginative take on these themes.
England had been experiencing a religious revival in the 1840s. Rossetti was caught up in the fervour. St Catherine (1857), The Lady of Shallot (1857) & The Tune of Seven Towers (1857)
Rossetti also painted & drew Arthurian legends & these would also inspire Edward Burne-Jones. Dante’s Vision (1855), Paolo & Francesca (1855) & Jane Burden (1857). Some of his models were minor artists.

Watteau’s work exemplifies the Rococo which evolved from the Baroque. His delicate palette, bittersweet characters, Arcadian landscapes & nostalgic atmosphere are characteristic of the time. Mezzetin (1717), Fêtes Vénitiennes (1718) & an undated semi-clothed woman sing with joy!
Watteau continued to draw throughout his life. Here are three studies of three women (1716-17), The Remedy (1716-17) & Three Studies of a Lady (1715). Such careful drawings would reappear as figures in different works. Such ability is almost extinct today
Another major work by Watteau is his Festival of Love (1717) which is typical of his many canvases of elegant people in a timeless garden. The Toilette, of the same period, also represents a theme he regularly returned to - the female nude
He was forced to give up painting in 1947 as his hand was crippled with arthritis. Christ in Mourning Attire (1933), Pegasus (1938) & Vision of Peace (1947). In his final years religious themes became more important for him.
He went into exile in England during the Great War. The Mothers (1919), Justice (1907-14), The Winning Genius (1914). During this period his thoughts turned to the invasion of his country & the bloodshed of WWI. His Mothers is a tribute to the bereaved.
On his return to Belgium he became Professor of Life Studies at the Brussels Academy (1907-37). The School of Plato (1908) & L’oubil des Passions (1913). His commitment to studies of the nude throughout his career show the role to have been an ideal choice for him.
