While these are separated scenes, they each convey some sense of melancholic isolation, which thematically, begins to go away once they’re with each other. However, on the other side of things, Katsura and Sarutobi have shots that mainly highlight a general schtick of theirs.

We do have a bunch of cuts to random settings, although there’s a general theme here, since it goes through each of the main trio staring at something. It’s also followed up with a cute scene of them together which I mainly remember due to that one unfinished animation gag.

We have these movement transition lines with the Shinsengumi ending with them at night. Similar lines are used for Sarutobi, but then it’s a romantic dreamy background. Cut to Hasegawa on a bench and Hata with a creature, and I guess that’s because they debuted together?

We go from a random background to Gintoki being pulled by Otose, which fits the snappiness of the action, but then I don’t really get the long shot of the other characters in Snack Otose. It’s a cute scene showing them off, but it feels disconnected with the music and style.

The problem is either the lack of flow or the song, and that latter reason is kind of weird because it’s the same band that did ED 3 (one of my favorites). In this opening shot, the weather is consistent, so it flows there at least, and I like how this part fits with the music.

Certain openings have character moments on top of random backgrounds, and this is no exception of course. This time around we have tie-dye esque 90s internet backgrounds? Little peculiar but it‘s not out of place. Also, Zenzou is not having a fun time here.

Actually, I really love this sequence too. There’s a satisfying weight to each movement. Gintoki and Hijikata struggle and then fling each other, Otae’s punch lingers on the impact, Sougo’s bazooka snaps in place before firing, Yamazaki winds up before serving, etc.

I am what some may consider “incredibly biased towards anything related to the Joui 4 because they’re all perfect.”The cherry on top here is the extended shot of Gintoki in the past, since the previous 3 characters correspond to it.

Generally, this opening is very relaxing both in terms of the song and the use of shots. A lot of scenes here are wide and long, and the use of the different times in the day kind of illustrate the Yorozuya’s new day by day lives. Though, it might not be intentional.
