Pen & ink sketches made during service aboard an LCG (landing craft gun) during WW2. LCGs were primarily used to provide direct fire against beach positions.

Army art!
Donald Akroyd of 4 Durham Survey Regiment kept this caricature of himself which was sketched in 1942. He donated it to us along with his photographs, memoir, and other wartime memorabilia.

Robert Lee from Bingley, 150 Bde was captured at Gazala.
He painted The Last Supper, & carved the Frauenkirche Angel in memory of the refugees he witnessed fleeing Dresden during the raids of Feb 1945.

Brigade Intelligence Officer Iain Tennant, 201 Guards Brigade, in the Western Desert.
He was captured at Tobruk.

Envelopes painted by Alfred crisp, containing letters sent to his daughters.
Alfred, a fire watcher in East Dulwich, had poor health due to being gassed at Ypres WW1. His envelopes were all kept and are now preserved in our archive.

WW2 mustard gas disaster:
A German air raid on the port of Bari, Italy, on 2 Dec 1943 sunk 27 ships. One of those was the American Liberty ship John Harvey which was carrying a secret cargo of 2,000 mustard gas bombs.

RAF navigator Stan Hope had to bale out of his Mosquito due to engine failure on 8 Dec 1942.
During his time as a POW, Stan spent 114 days in solitary confinement.

Another of our wartime artists:
Leeds-born freelance artist P M Peel was conscripted into the Army & became a POW at Stalag 8B where he produced/designed sets for the camp theatrical productions & made forged ID documents for would-be escapees.
