A couple more I really like. Since most of the classic series are either NES games or NES styled we don't often get a detailed look at the world they take place in, which makes me appreciate these a lot.
A couple of backgrounds from Mega Man: The Power Battle/Fighters that I really like
The original Motor Toon GP looks pretty decent as far as early PS1 games go, but the Plastic Lake track looks incredible
So beautifully weird and abstract, I can't think of many other games on the console with these kinds of visuals!
Of all the censorship changes that were made to the US version of Final Fight on SNES, I'm glad they at least kept in the dick door
compare and contrast with Konami's Xexex, another shmup that came out around the same time with similarly impressive visual effects, though this time used to create beautiful yet bizarre and alien landscapes.
I always love it when older games pushed the boundaries of 2D tech!
