Here's the code, the gist of it is that it you draw something to the screen with a nonzero alpha value (after clearing the screen like in line 16), and then anything drawn after changing the blend mode will be drawn to that region.

What I really love about this game is how much variety and detail each track has. Some tracks even have certain details depending on which lap you're on. For instance, lap 3 of the Seasons track adds apples to the trees. and lap 4 gives the trees autumn colors!
