South Asia, and Southern India in particular has a long historically interesting local Jewish population on the Malabar coast, In the late Medieval period there was also an influx of Portuguese "New Christians" who found a new home in the Deccan sultanates.

Have you heard of Malik Ambar? The Ethiopian Regent in Southern India who rose from a slave to a mercenary, all the way to the political structure of Ahmednagar. Malik was one of the original sparks of inspiration for this game.
