Alfie did not want to throw his apple away. This was the apple he wanted, the one where the worm had made his home. They took it out into the garden so that if the worm got tired of being inside it could come out and wriggle about in the grass.

At last they came to the steep little wooden stairs which led up to Grandma’s attic. This was the highest point in the world.
‘Time to go back to Base Camp. Let’s take our treasure with us.’

They swam in billowing oceans and crawled through dense undergrowth... when they reached the top they pitched a tent and ate their supplies.

The lane outside Grandma’s gate had a stream running down the middle of it and plenty of mud. It was fun at first, sloshing about.
‘I think we had better go on an indoor expedition’ said Grandma.

Mum’s friend Lynn was going to get married and she wanted Alfie to be her page. Alfie had to be careful to leave a space between his feet and Lynn’s. Half way up the church Alfie felt something tugging at the back of his shirt.

One morning when Alfie and Annie Rose and Grandma went to visit the tortoises they found Lorna very upset. Winnie was nowhere to be seen!
Alfie was looking very hard at Mrs Hall’s stones. He noticed that one of them was not white but brown.

Bernard is Alfie’s best friend. Bernard’s mum finds him quite tiring sometimes but she is sure one day he will grow up to have perfect manners.
He is one of Annie Rose’s favourite people. One of the first words she learned to say was ‘Dernard!’
