At tea-time Dave was rather quiet.
In the bath he was even quieter.
At bed-time he said:
‘I want Dogger.’
But Dogger was nowhere to be found.
This week we will be returning to the pages of Dogger. First published in 1977, these pages with Shirley’s special letter, are taken from the 40th anniversary edition.
Once there was a soft brown toy called Dogger. One of his ears pointed upwards and the other flopped over.
He strolled around the park until he came to a big grassy space. And this is where he saw the fairies. What a night that was for Jonadab! The most wonderful he could ever remember.
Jonadab and Rita
This week we’ll be escaping into the pages of Shirley’s magical story, Jonadab and Rita.
Once there was a girl called Minnie who lived in a beautiful apartment in Notting Hill.
The puddles in the lane were iced over. But it was thin ice and you could see the water underneath. Between the water and the ice were white frosty stars.
Alfie Weather
Grandma had put a night-light by the door which made a pattern of stars on the ceiling. Alfie lay and looked at them until at last he dropped off to sleep. Next morning when he woke up it was dark and the stars on the ceiling were still there.
Alfie Weather
This week we’ll be looking at Alfie Weather which includes the story Winter Stars.
Christmas was over. But now something else nice was going to happen. Mum and Alfie and Annie Rose were going for a visit to Grandma’s house.
Grandpa opened the box & flung all the papers & letters & things that were inside on to the bonfire.
‘But I thought they were special’, said William.
‘They were, but it’s not things that are important really. The special things are in my head. And my heart.’

Grandpa had not lived at William’s house for very long, only since Gran had died.

‘What a mess! said Mum. ‘I’ll never get them all up.’ And she briskly plugged in the vacuum cleaner. Vacuuming always a put her in a bossy mood.
‘Get your coat. We’ll have a bonfire,’ said Grandpa.
