We've gotten some questions about how the tech works. These are the original 2D sprites that were used. Our engine 3D-tizes them and renders the results in real-time!🙂

@LunchbillionArt Good question about the pose- here's what we used for Kaien. Most 2D sprites people use will likely have a 3/4 perspective as yours does. You also have the option to import additional views of the body parts, like a front-facing view, so you can experiment with the animation rig!
All the recent Granite love sparked a beautiful piece of #SmackStudio fan art by @EssieCosplay.
How could you say no to this face?
We love it, Essie. Thanks for sharing it!

So, we've been playing around with this new scaling functionality we added. It wasn't our original intent to use it for this, but it seems to allow for cool cinematic #pixelart animations! (No 3D model)
Artists, devs- do you think this might be useful?

3D spin created without a 3D model!
This animation combines a few techniques:
1) Our standard 3D #pixelart rotation algorithm for the body
2) A new technique for the head: hand-drawn images are swapped in automatically based on the current 3D rotation

Here's the original sprite we used (split into layers so that we could create the animation rig) and an export of the final animation as a png.
So we haven't announced a space animal yet for Smack Studio...

The spinning #pixelart animation above is created without a 3D model. All it takes is a 2D image of your character!
Here, we split the image into body parts used to create the rig. For the head and torso, a separate image is used for the back side.
