So the doubt comes, why not take the gems directly instead of the whole planet?
One reason would be that Time Stones only work on Little Planet, so Eggman needs to chain the whole planet and make it into a huge time machine. (3/6)

@Instrutilus What's more, the fact that the Sonicin Sonic2 GG Silver is significantly lower than the Sonic2 MD Mecha, these things together make me really think that it's happening before the MD version

I see people literally fighting over Tails' behavior in Forces and IDW, but no one mention of his behavior in Unleashed where it's even worse, at least in Forces and IDW makes more sense.
