day 13 for #avianaugust is the Puffleg Hummingbird, a big family o' birds so I picked the black-breasted puffleg

they're an endangered species native to Ecuador, where locals call them "zamarrito pechinegro" -- zamarros being furred chaps, a reference to its fluffy little pants!

a slightly delayed day 12 for #avianaugust, the Great Blue Heron

they're the largest heron in north america, and a very common visitor to wetlands! they hunt by sight & stealth alone, standing still for long periods of time as they wait for an unsuspecting fishy to swim up!

I am very tired today so instead of a proper bird post today, enjoy this wip view into my painting process lol I'll post the finished thing tomorrow

day 9 for #avianaugust is the Little Auk, or Dovekie!

these guys nest in big flocks on arctic cliffsides, where a couple cares for a single egg... I'm completely enamored with the idea of seeing a big sea cliff just covered in flocks of these cuties 😭

day 1 for #avianaugust, an Eastern Towhee!

bird fax: like meadowlarks, towhees are subject to a lot of taxonomic debate! The "rufous-sided towhee" was split into two species, the spotted & eastern towhee. Unlike the "yellow-breasted" meadowlarks tho, they will often interbreed!
