She responded to uncanny themes, often from the Border Ballads in her pictures of ‘Clerk Saunders’ & ‘The Rowing Boat’
Here’s a fragment of her own ballad:
‘Many a mile over land and sea

Thinking today about poet & painter Elizabeth Siddal who died #OTD 1862. Grateful for these images (made by her husband Rossetti) of Siddal at work.

Today, in anticipation of Xmas, we continue to journey with Giotto towards the Incarnation.

Here Mary is betrothed to Joseph- he places a ring on her finger. Then she returns home with her friends.

#Ruskin noted the ‘strange seriousness & dignity’ of their actions.

Burne-Jones also painted the #witch Circe in oil and watercolour. Zambaco modelled for her too, preparing the potions to change trespassing sailors into pigs.
Circe's story appealed to the later Pre-Raphaelites like Waterhouse, who shows her in the fullness of her powers

For #Halloween- a few of my favourite Pre-Raphaelite #witches:
Burne-Jones loved the Arthurian story of Merlin & Vivien (aka Nimue).
'The Beguiling of Merlin' is currently on show in Pre-Raphaelite Sisters @NPGLondon
