Probably the best Space Quest? I'm very fond of this franchise though this is the third game in a row with -literally zero women characters in it-

SAM AND MAX HIT THE ROAD

You can go back and play this game for a lesson in just the basic question of 'how do I write funny computer game dialogue.' It's excellent, it's interesting and it's also one of only three games that exist about America.

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL

An excellent two thirds of a game about an interesting character during a period where you were getting all sorts of these fun Zeldalike action adventures being made by people who got to build off what OOT did.

PSYCHONAUTS

This year is a bit more dense than a lot of other years can be, with Two Thrones and some Pokemon bangers and the NDS ports of the Phoenix Wrights, but I'd be lying if Psychonauts wasn't one of my first games that really underscored 'great doesn't mean perfect'
