The T-34 is often presented as a disposable object, but they were very long lasting tanks. Many early models not only survived the war, but remained in use after it. This photo was taken in 1957 and depicts a tank with an early hexagonal turret still in service.

in 1945 the T26E1 entered trials at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. This variant of the T26 tank used the powerful 90 mm T15E1 gun that could penetrate the front of a Panther from over 2 kilometers. https://t.co/eQ3vkIGZlr

in 1933 the USSR's nascent tank industry ran into issues with switching from 37 mm to 45 mm tank guns: too many BT-2 turrets were made for the old gun. Conversion of old 37 mm Hotchkiss guns from MS-1 tanks was pitched as a solution. https://t.co/lFqdhi36fg

in 1944 a SU-85 commanded by Lt. Kurochkin faced off against two Tigers, knocking out one of them. Kurochkin later served as the prototype for the character Lt. Maleshkin in the movie At War as At War (Na Voyne Kak Na Voyne). https://t.co/zqTekVuadn

Trials of the A-32 revealed that the engine had a lot of excess power that could be used to give the tank heavy armour. in 1939 trials showed that the tank still drove well loaded to 24 tons, paving the way for the T-34. https://t.co/RqJdEv2q1h

The DP proved itself an effective infantry machine gun, but not without drawbacks. in 1944 a very detailed analysis of its service was composed by Guards Major General Vekhin, calling for a more modern belt fed LMG. https://t.co/lO9AaNCJ7I

80 years ago trials of an A-32 tank weighed down to the mass of an A-34 were held. The chassis could carry additional weight, but the exact amount had to be tested in practice. Just over a month later the A-34 would be accepted into service as the T-34. https://t.co/Ro5j2aA404

The T-44 was a tough nut to crack, however the thickness of the armour plates made welding difficult. After several nonpenetrating shots from Soviet 85 mm 52-K and German 88 mm Pak 43 guns the lower front plate fell off. https://t.co/AqIDFfhQ75

Unlike the M37 which kept the M24's hull relatively unchanged, the layout of the M41 was redesigned. A rear open fighting compartment allowed installation of a 155 mm howitzer. These SPGs were too late to fight in WWII, but showed themselves well in Korea. https://t.co/OTkLPcOoXJ
