St. Ignatius of Loyola (1556)

He served king Ferdinand V as a soldier until the age of thirty. Recovering from a severe wound, he was given a book of the Lives of Saints, confessed his sins, and laid his sword at the feet of the Blessed Virgin. He founded the Society of Jesus.

SS. Felix, Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrice

Holy Pontiff Felix III was martyred in Tuscany in the time of the Arians (365). Simplicius and Faustinus, denounced as Christians, were put to death under Diocletian in 304. Beatrice, the sister, was arrested and strangled in prison.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

On July 16, 1251, Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock and placed in his hands the habit which was to be their distinctive sign. It was given as an assurance, for all who died wearing it, of her protection. Pope Innocent IV attached to it many privileges.

St. Prosper of Aquitaine (5th century)

Born in the Roman province of Aquitaine, he is known chiefly through his writings. He was a strong collaborator of St. Augustine. It was primarily St. Prosper who crushed the Pelagian heresy when it was raising its head in the see of Peter.

St. Silverius, Pope (538)

Successor to Agapetus, who had angered Theodora by condemning Patriarch Anthimus, ruining her plans to restore Monophysitism. Silverius refused to restore Anthimus, and was exiled to Palmaria, where he died worn out by privations and sufferings.

An Augustinian canon inspired by the example of the five Franciscan martyrs, he put on their habit. Denied a martyr's palm due to poor health, he received the mission to preach the Gospel, and refuted heretics with his preaching.
