Tokusatsu, in comparison, I think has taken the "invoking an image" and turned it into an art. The protagonists/monsters are all built around specific motifs. You know what you're looking at right away.

Yeah, that's fair, but even Superman's design is intentional. The focal point is the shield S symbol. He's a guardian.
