Dec 22nd - 'The Adoration of the Magi' (1609) by Rubens. Descriptions of the magus Balthazar as an African king date back to Bede, and the first paintings depicting him as such to the 1400s. Rubens's Balthazar is based on his own posthumous portrait of Mulay Ahmad, King of Tunis.

Experiencing a reasonably mild but still tedious visit from the black dog. By sheer coincidence, while disappearing down a wiki-wormhole, I also stumbled across the Wikipedia page on depression, and it's the biggest laugh I've had since Rudy's press conference.

The story of Nebuchadnezzar, as told in the Book of Daniel, is one a king driven mad and reduced to bestial indignity by hubris, as depicted in this c.1795 monotype print by William Blake and a 1512 woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder.
