'Primulas'~ Francis Edward James, (1912)

Across the lower part of this watercolour are pink and mauve flowers (primulas) spread out against brown stems and green leaves. The background is washed in blue, grey and pink.

A scene showing a group of seven Irish warriors on horseback carrying spears. The warriors are dressed in toga-like garments and have strapped sandals, the straps reaching to the knees.

Daumier began painting for his own pleasure from 1834. The subjects in his paintings were mainly drawn from observations he made from everyday life, from classical mythology and from literature.
