Artist Spotlight 🔦 Basil Blackshaw.

Blackshaw was born in Co. Antrim and studied at the Belfast College of Art from 1948 to 1951. In his year of graduation he won a travelling scholarship which enabled him to spend a year in Paris. He has exhibited regularly since 1952.

'Dublin' ~ Michelle Woodward.

This is a two colour intaglio print (etching and aquatint) on paper, depicting the river liffey, the north quays and three bridges, including the Ha'penny Bridge.

'The Advance Guard' ~ Georges Scott (1905).

Marching into Friday like... This watercolour shows two soldiers on horses trotting along a country road. On both sides of the road can be seen green grass with wild red flowers dotted around.

'Reflections: China and Japan' ~ William Orpen (1902).

Orpen was a close friend of Hugh Lane to whom he was also distantly related. This work is a virtuoso still life painting which demonstrates Orpen's facility at depicting texture and reflective surfaces with flair and skill.

'Shy Sweetheart' ~ Gerard Dillon.

Although most of his adult life was spent in London, Dillon chiefly exhibited in Ireland, holding exhibitions both in Dublin and Belfast. Being a self-taught artist, he was perhaps naturally drawn to a free-form expressive style in painting.

'The Advance Guard' ~ Georges Scott (1905).

This watercolour shows two soldiers on horses trotting along a country road. On both sides of the road can be seen green grass with wild red flowers dotted around. Behind the soldiers are green fields as far as the horizon.

'Primulas' ~ Francis James.

Across the lower part of this watercolour are pink and mauve flowers (primulas) spread out against brown stems and green leaves. The background is washed in blue, grey and pink.

'Meadow' ~ Mainie Jellett.

Throughout her career she also worked as a designer, working in the theatre and also designing carpets. In 1938 she received a major commission from the Free State to paint murals for the Irish pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition in Glasgow.
