I have been studying the properties of Mario's mustache and I found that it was originally intended to reflect the status of Mario's mood, drooping when Mario was unhappy. This canon continued until at least 1987 with Golf: Japan Course, after which the attribute was dropped.

King Koopa is not pleased with what the Marios have been doing to the Gamestop stock.
