Pride Month Day 10: today I did a quick (and bad) doodle of the Japanese daimyō, Uesugi Kenshin (1530-1578) - a possible "transgender" samurai. I debated if he even belongs on this list as a "queer" historical figure, but ended up featuring him mainly because I think he's cool.
My favorite queer historical figures illustrations I’ve made for pride month so far :)
Feel free to send me more suggestions, I’m not sure if I can keep this up all month but I’ll definitely try to make more in my free time between videos.
Pride Month Day 6 (sorry I'm late!), today I drew the Poet Queen of the Isle of Lesbos, herself, Sappho! She was renown throughout the ancient world for her beautiful poetry & her love for other women. She is partly responsible for the modern term "Lesbian" (after her island).
Pride Month Day 4, I did a quick (n' sloppy) doodle of Achilles and Patroclus from Homer's the Iliad (and other stories associated with the Trojan War). Two warriors from Greek legend who loved each other greatly, perhaps romantically.
For Pride Month Day 2, I drew the first and only transgender Roman Emperor. Elagabalus reigned from 218 to 222 AD, beginning at the young age of 14. Born biologically male, Elagabalus preferred female pronouns and sought sex reassignment surgery.
@FunPoliceCo It's certainly possible that this trope is a WW2 legacy. Other villain tropes supposedly have similar origins, for example bad guys having facial "scars" might have come about from Mafia bosses and Nazi Generals having scars as well.
Happy Pride Month!
Reminder that Queer people exist and have existed since the dawn of time.
I doodled two members of the Sacred Band of Thebes on the eve of the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BC). The Band was a Greek elite military force composed of 150 pairs of male lovers.
