The french painter Paul Gauguin traveled to Tahiti and interacted with native people there who practiced traditions similar to Hawaiians. Funny enough, several Tahitians thought him to be a "Māhū" or something similar due to his flamboyant dress.

These customs were actually very common and still continue to this day in some regions of the world. There are many examples of these from the Native American "Two Spirits" to the Indian "Hijras" to "Bugis" of Indonesia.
