WWA had a very bad relationship with the American press so he decided to move to England. In England, WWA became very involved with the newspaper business, purchasing various newspapers, including The Observer.

#TwoTemplePlaceinFocus 2TP was carried out by some of the most skilled craftsmen of the period such as Nathaniel Hitch. His talent is represented not only through the larger works he did but notably for the smaller features like this mermaid carved into the benches.

#TwoTemplePlaceinFocus Our beautiful timber hammerbeam roof takes inspiration from Medieval and Tudor houses. Amongst the panelling we see blank areas of Portland stone that are at each end of the room used to emphasise the intensity of surface and decoration.

In 1978, Astor married Mary Dahlgreen Paul, who also came from a prominent family in Philadelphia. Here he can be seen pictured with their children; Pauline, John, Waldorf and Gwendolyn.

#TwoTemplePlaceinFocus We see here the elaborate doorway in the Great Hall with its silver gilt relief figures of nine Arthurian women designed by George Fampton. The whole door seems a powerful tribute to these women with each figure is in its own decorated arched enclosure.

Today's #FridayFocus is 'Study of a piece of Brick' by #Ruskin. Ruskin advocated regularly drawing natural forms as a means of understanding the character of nature. The weathered & mossy surface of the brick provided a lesson in observation to Ruskin’s students. #PowerofSeeing
