WWA had a very bad relationship with the American press so he decided to move to England. In England, WWA became very involved with the newspaper business, purchasing various newspapers, including The Observer.

Our beautiful timber hammerbeam roof takes inspiration from Medieval and Tudor houses. Amongst the panelling we see blank areas of Portland stone that are at each end of the room used to emphasise the intensity of surface and decoration.

In 1978, Astor married Mary Dahlgreen Paul, who also came from a prominent family in Philadelphia. Here he can be seen pictured with their children; Pauline, John, Waldorf and Gwendolyn.

We see here the elaborate doorway in the Great Hall with its silver gilt relief figures of nine Arthurian women designed by George Fampton. The whole door seems a powerful tribute to these women with each figure is in its own decorated arched enclosure.

Today's is 'Study of a piece of Brick' by Ruskin advocated regularly drawing natural forms as a means of understanding the character of nature. The weathered & mossy surface of the brick provided a lesson in observation to Ruskin’s students.
