@billiamthies Beebe's cryptid fishes are the only ones I think are plausible.
Look at this Jeletzkyteuthis fossilized in the act of predating on a Parabelopeltis! Both are vampyromorph cephalopods from the Early Jurassic of Germany.
They probably went undetected for so long since they had adapted to live in the deep sea, which is a poorly represented environment in the fossil record. It's a similar situation to the gap between Cretaceous and modern coelacanths. Art by @paleospot. #FossilFishWeek
I tried testing that new iceberg simulator on a Cadborosaurus. It turned out to be a little front heavy.

In short, it's not at all a good reference for what Gigantopithecus would've actually looked like. I see paleoartists using it way too often because they're unaware of its background. Use this amazing skull of the closely related Sivapithecus (GSP 15000) instead.
