I do get it for their evos (even though 2/3 of them are also ok in my book), but I do like the more cartoony monkeys here. They're cute. :)

(certainly my preferred choices out of the existing monkey/chimp 'mons)

8. Shadow Pokemon

Matching the rest of the 'mons on the Professor's Sonia palette, keeping the same reference of Shadow Pokemon from XD and Go.
A bit of a personal anecdote: this set was also inspired by Super Smash Bros Brawl giving some of its cast a de-facto "dark" palette.

7. Lycanroc (Midnight)

Like Juniper having Minccino at the start, Kukui starts with a Rockruff, later having seemingly evolved it into a midday Lycanroc.
Midday and Dusk forms would likely have been repeat colors with Charmander and Zigzagoon, so I instead went with Midnight.

5. Charmander

In Pokemon XY, the Kalos starters are given to the protag and their friends as a present from the Professor, whose lab is in Lumiose.
Upon arriving there, he will also gift the player character one of the three Kanto starters, for the Mega Evolutions they can have.

4. Shiny

Self-explanatory, though you might notice it is not grouped with the Professor's Pokemon's shiny palettes here; instead it's in the same slot as the Fennel palette, fitting the all-pink color scheme of it.
Pikachu just felt like the better fit for Oak.

3. Zigzagoon (Sugimori art)

In the intro of Pokemon Emerald, Professor Birch is being chased around by a wild Zigzagoon. Between it and RS's Poochyena, I thought it was the more appropriate reference for Minccino.
The official art uses lighter shades, thus easier to work with.
