In physeteroids this part of the skull is where we find a complex suite of structures related to echolocation, mainly the melon and spermaceti organ. These structures are hypertrophied & rich in lipids, making them a great target for predators and scavengers! #WhaleWednesday 3/5

One of the new species, Pontolis barroni, is named after our colleague John Barron from the @USGS in honor of his contributions to biostratigraphy of #California and the North Pacific! For this species we have males, females & juveniles!
