#TheSouvenir, dated c.1775-80, depicts a young girl carving an initial into a tree. The intimate composition can be seen as a celebration of female creativity in an era when women painters were starting to gain prominence.

🐯 Happy #InternationalTigerDay! This beautifully-wrought silver-gilt tiger-headed mace was made in late eighteenth-century India.
Not intended as a weapon, this mace was employed purely for processional use, carried by harbingers to herald the approach of an important official.

The painting shows a woman, a frothy vision of pink silk, poised mid-air beyond the reach of both her elderly husband and her reclining lover.
English painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, was born #onthisday 1723.
This outstanding full-length portrait, dated c.1775, depicts Mrs Elizabeth Carnac. The sun-dappled landscape setting shows the artist’s response to the portrait innovations of his rival, #ThomasGainsborough.

Evidence suggests that during the #18thcentury Hals’s work was displayed alongside Vermeer's #GirlwithaPearlEarring in a castle owned by Prince Adam, also known as #Beast.
This pair of #16thcentury enamel salt containers are attributed to the French enameler #ColinNouailher.
They depict #TheAgesofLove, an unusual interpretation of the Ages of Man, a Renaissance trope that explored human existence on earth.
