Mark Catesby was born #OTD 1683, #author & illustrator of ‘The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands’ (publ. 1731-1743), it remained an authority on American natural history for over 100 years!

Sir William Jardine was born #OTD in 1800. With his brother-in-law, William Lizars, they published the popular 40 volume 'The Naturalist's Library' 1833-43. It was comparatively low in price & helped to inspire a wider interest in natural history.

Born #OTD 1776 – Charles Hamilton Smith. He assembled a huge collection of watercolour drawings to illustrate his books & talks. ZSL's former Secretary, Professor McNeill Alexander, presented ZSL with the Coulton portfolio of 55 watercolours, all except one are probably by Smith.
