Cervantes pilots the GR-2 an all-blue mecha adorned with a crescent-shaped headpiece. It’s certainly an impressive piece of tech but lacks the visual flair of Robo. I do wonder what its model number, though. Does it stand for Giant Robo #2? In that case, is Robo the prototype?

Genya’s scorched earth agenda foreshadows the horrors he'll unleash to get revenge; he wants to instigate an apocalypse. Not only does he reveal himself for the absolute villain he is, but his declaration creates a permanent rift between himself and Alberto, which is important.

As expected, this action scene is really fun. Since the rules of physics (or lack thereof) that govern this world are so elastic, you never know what to expect, which makes for some thrilling set pieces.

This time we’re treated to three new mecha! The first, a Heinz ketchup-looking jobber who drops bombs from the sky. The second, a robot that's covered in spikes; looks like a bull. And finally, we have a Loch Ness monster type (my favorite) that reminds me of Gypsy from MST3K.

More generally, #GiantRobo is show with an underlying environmental message about overconsumption and the dangers of energy dependence. But more specifically, it can be read as a condemnation of Japan’s increasing reliance on nuclear power at the end of the twentieth century.

This mecha montage pulls from the greater Yokoyama canon. Of course, the constraints of a seven day narrative only allow for so many robots to make an appearance. Imagawa, though, clearly wants to pay homage to his legacy. Plus, it makes this world seem so large.
