Stanley Spencer's portrait of artist & writer Richard Carline who wrote one of the best biographies on Spencer. He told a story of how ferreting in an incinerator Spencer found ‘a whole bevy of unopened tins of bully beef in good condition’ on which he feasted for a fortnight.

Walter Crane's illustration for the poem 'The World's Age' by Charles Kingsley. Crane's life spanned a period of reawakening in British art. A revaluation & questioning of its social purpose was proposed by Ruskin and William Morris both in theory and practice.

One of the pictures I've most enjoyed living with has been this painting by Elisabeth Collins titled 'Remembering.' It was part of her show at the late lamented Albemarle Gallery in 1998. It was sold this morning.

Harry Becker,'A Man Named Samson' was a horseman in Wenhaston, Suffolk. A veteran of WW1, one day in November 1919 he walked & drilled a 25-acre winter barley field. Becker was eager to record the final days of an ancient rural, farming system and a countryside he deeply loved.

Spent some of the morning varnishing pictures. I need to frame this large canvas by the Scottish Impressionist Archibald Kay - it's still a magnificent painting without a frame.
