Now #extinct, the Marquesan Swamphen P. paepae was described only in 1988 from 600 y/o bones found in French #Polynesia. #PaulGauguin's 1902 painting shows this #swamphen being killed by a dog. #ThorHeyerdahl has seen it in 1937. It must have become extinct soon afterwards
