You can TOTALLY have realism in your BGs too. Bambi and Cinderella find a wonderful balance of realism and impressionism.
There isn't a push to have FORCED realism just to prove the artists spent a lot of time on it. It helps create the films ascetics.

Oh and this is totally a problem with OG looneytunes too. The HBO shorts did pretty good to capture that mix of styles. I can't really fault them for trying either... but the movement away from 'realism' helped LTs stand out and look more unique.

And for the most part, NewLooneyTunes does has some good scenes. What started to bother me was noticing when they just did a straight line BG. Like the DEPTH is missing from these shots? The BGs are painted well, but the characters are just... THERE.

Overly detailed backgrounds do NOT automatically make them better just because you spent more time adding details.
Every time I watch Chuck Jones short, his background paintings do so much without taking your attention away from the cartoons you're supposed to be watching.

He makes a million cartoon ideas, and one of them was a harem anime sort of thing. I'm some like 18 years old now, I think my comment was equally spergy and rude like "hasn't this idea been DONE before? Like, you're just doing Tenchi Muyo and this Manga AOI House had come out."
