Trying too hard can cause you to over focus on details, and miss the general look.

Have you tried blocking out colours before you shade, like this? I mostly do it for the undersketch for paintings, but can help as a starting point too.

I already take care when designing characters so they have variations in shape, colour, depth, placement, etc, but every once in a while I sit down to draw different shapes from different angles,
expressions and colours.

Image 1: he wears a floor-length robe and usually his hair down at his "home" Temple (Eastriver Temple). While travelling he wears a cloak.
