member (1881–1969) was born 142 years ago today. He painted this resplendent canvas soon after relocating to BC from Toronto in 1926. “British Columbia is heaven," the artist wrote. "It trembles within me and pains me with its wonder.”

(1815–1872) painting depicts the historically difficult winter crossing between Quebec City and Lévis on the St. Lawrence River. Intrepid passengers travelled in special Royal Mail canoes, whose crews manually hauled them over ice floes blocking their path.

Winnipeg-born, New York City-based artist Marcel Dzama's drawing Untitled, 2000, depicts an enormous bat feasting on the blood of a slender woman, who has obligingly rolled up her sleeve to expose her bare arm. A fittingly surreal image for Halloween!
