The Newfoundland is a large dog breed with a longstanding maritime legacy: as ship’s dogs, working with fishermen, and performing water rescues. From their impressive strength and high lung capacity to their water-resistant coats and webbed feet, they're built for the job.

According to a July report from California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife, two of the state’s three wolf packs currently have pups. The Whaleback Pack and the Lassen pack (which also produced two litters in 2020) both have had at least six pups each this year.

They originate in Louisiana, and the AKC describes them as a “multi-purpose working dog that is well-muscled and powerful, but with a sense of agility and endurance.”

In April 2021, trail cams caught footage of the first wild fishers to be born in the North Cascades in approximately fifty years. It’s another positive milestone in Washington State’s restoration efforts.
