At a skirmish at Y Dalar Hir fought in 1648 a small force of Welsh royalists were routed along the shores of the Menai Strait. With the capture of the royalist commander, Sir John Owen, the revolt in North Wales temporarily collapsed.

6 March 1644. Second siege of Newark.
Sir John Meldrum & c.7000 parliamentarians besiege the town. They were repulsed, losing many men & a 'great brass piece' that had originally been taken from the Marquis of Newcastle.
Prince Rupert spectacularly relieved Newark 2 weeks later.

On this day in 1643, parliamentarians commanded by Sir John Meldrum capture Gainsborough - the 3rd time it had changed hands that year.
A small fleet from Hull had supported Meldrum's attack upon a royalist fort at Barton on Strather by bombarding it.

in 1402. Battle of Homildon Hill. Dunbar dissuaded the aptly named ‘Hotspur’ from leading a charge against the Scottish army,when the archers alone could cause major damage. Scottish charges by Archibald Douglas & Sir John Swinton fail. Douglas is severely wounded & captured

On this day in 1644. The Scottish Battle of Tippermuir.
With MacColla's Irish veterans forming his centre, James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, defeats a Covenanter army sent against him. It's the first of a string of victories that see him temporarily secure Scotland for the King.

in 1644 the Earl of Essex refused the second summons to surrender from the royalist armies. Having invaded Cornwall, Essex was now trapped by the combined royal army. The closing stages of the Lostwithiel Campaign could now begin

On this day 1643. Lord Willoughby of Parnham captured royalist Gainsborough, as well as the Earl of Kingston & 250 royalists.
Kingston's house holds out until the next day & upon its surrender 'a great store of treasure' was taken. But within weeks, the royalists retook the town.

Battle of Benburb. in 1646 Owen Roe O'Neill defeated Robert Munro's Anglo-Scottish army. An Irish flank attack, assisted by returning cavalry drove Munro's men into the River Blackwater. It was the greatest Irish victory of the Confederate Wars
