10 July 1940 was the first day of the Battle of Britain. Over a three month period, 2,937 British and Allied aircrew took to the skies to defend Britain from the German Luftwaffe.

31 October 1940 passed without significant aerial conflict but later became regarded officially as the last day of the Battle of Britain.
501 Squadron saw extensive action during the Battle of Britain, with 19 pilots killed, more than any other squadron.

To Fight Another Day by Mark Postlethwaite is dedicated to PO ‘Bill’ Watling of 92 Sqn. During the Battle of Britain he escaped from a burning aircraft, returning to operations within a month, but was killed just a few months later. He was 20 years old.

Or this image which shows Pilot Officer William ‘Bill’ Watling hauling himself out of his burning aircraft. He suffered burns to his hands and face but was back operational just a month later. Tragically he was killed in a flying accident in 1941.
