It would pain me to think that (random example) Yoichi Kotabe looked back at his 'old' Mario3 art and could only see faults in it.

@mrneilesq Yeah that's what I'm wondering, if shadows were painted solid black on a layer below. I've seen some examples of that on animation cels (googled). Seemingly opaque paint.

Would love to learn more about how color separation worked in the heyday of traditional book publishing. Superficially reminds me of animation cel / layout.
