I may have mentioned this earlier. But the use of magic in a fantasy novel. What if Magic was actually a deadly narcotic. The more magic is used, the closer the wielder of magic approaches a dark abyss of sheer insanity. One step over the cliff, and there is no return.
Good writing (of any genre) should paint complex ideas as a vivid portrait in words. So vivid in nature it activates all senses of a reader's psyche.
In truth, good writing becomes a narcotic a reader cannot put down.
Damn! I wish I had that talent. Well, maybe.

. . . my point is, Mycroft, if the reader isn't hooked after reading the first two pages of the first chapter, they'll never be hooked.
And I'm telling you the first page alone will hook the reader if the pick up Murderous Passions. (with fingers crossed)
