Scan and cleanup. Using red or blue ink for the wash gives me an advantage here, allowing me to separate the lineart and the inkwash into different layers, giving me more control over these separate elements. If I used only black ink, it'd be more difficult to adjust all around.
Here's a process thread about the process behind making this spread from my upcoming graphic novel ENTER THE BLUE, coming out in January 2022 via @bluenoterecords and @Z2comics. If you dig process stuff, feel free to share!

I first met Josh Frankel from @Z2comics at NYCC in 2013--I gave him a pitch packet for INSTRUMENTAL. Z2 eventually put it out in 2017. This led to CHASIN' THE BIRD. And THAT led to ENTER THE BLUE, out in January! What a journey! This will be one of the prints with the DELUXE ed.!
I wanted to draw a Batman after teaching today and I managed to finish it just before the end of #BatmanDay #BatmanDay2021. I like him best when he's basically a scary shape. Black, red, and white ink and red colored pencil on vellum bristol board.
It's that day every college instructor loves--today in my class COMICS & MUSIC we'll be discussing formal devices in my two music-related graphic novels INSTRUMENTAL and CHASIN' THE BIRD. How does INSTRUMENTAL formally reflect its soundtrack? How does BIRD depict music? :-)
