I am supporting the Bundle for Ukraine with a bunch of assetpacks, together worth more than 50US$.
Check the bundle on itch. Link in the comments.
@appleciderwitch @sofakissen 1) Caspar Wolf
2) Karl Julius von Leypold
3) Carl Friedrich Lessing
4) Carl Spitzweg
Btw that it's a lot of Carls, just seems to be a very common name at the time :D
David Caspar Friedrich of course is the most well known artist of the time, but the directions are similar.
The cost of the ambition of the insane is always paid for by common people.
Aggressors must be stopped swift and decisively to stop any further catastrophes.
Otherwise their hunger for power tears everything and everyone down.
It‘s time to #standwithukraine for a better future.
One of the things which however easily can happen, is that the color balance gets thrown off. It's really good to have an exact idea of the mood you want for the surrounding.
Luckily I have a bunch of concepts for everything done earlier:
Evelyn, the pearl princess, is as well a pretty old character of mine which already went through a lot of prior iteration. You might have seen her before, However in the mockup I featured her the first time fully geared up using, her double handed sword - classy :)
The "Witch of the West" is another old, reoccuring character of mine. But with her snaplock rifle and also rather dark appearance she felt way out of place for the storytelling of the mockup. I finished her sprite up independently:

Bloodraven on the left of the mockup is a very old character of mine. I got a bunch of drawings and designs in all kinds of styles for him and all with some different design ideas, so he was a good candidate to experiment on in this early step also he is clearly is the "bad guy"
Another interesting bit in the design process was, that I got stuck a fair time on the style of the characters.
I wanted to let them feel like dark fantasy, but still work well with pixelart. So details needed to read clearly and that the sprites contrast well against the bg
I knew a big part of the mockup would be taken by the UI, so after the initial sketch I immediately started to rough it out and I kept a healthy focus on the characters.
A fun fact about the UI is that it's a lso based on earlier work...
As I started the sketch I knew I wanted to go for a battle scene. I knew I wanted to set up a dramatic scene with a castle and an impressive background. I also used some of my characters I designed earlier
After the initial hours this was the first sketch:
