Speaking of callbacks, the "antagonist" for the issue didn't also made me think to another team always teased but I can't recall the full story on. Namely this one from Dustin Nguyen.
The bit with Iris and Steph is no doubt a nod to the failed "Young Justice" series pitched by Nick Spencer when he "wrote" Supergirl prior to the New 52. I say "wrote" because DC gonna DC and axed his run before it even started. So here was his team:
@SplrisFlwerCrwn #2 Dick was a bit disrespectful to her the entire issue to be honest.
Course, this theory has its own can of worms. As Batman: Wayne Family Adventures proves:
In turn, this would explain more motivation as to WHY Stephanie and her would want to be Batgirls (something that's never been fully addressed on the page, but between issues of Batman).
The last "true" reference we've gotten on Cass's "modern" origin is this talk between Harper/Cullen Row back in the Punchline one-shot of late 2020 (right around Death Metal):
I think Richard Dragon broke the Batman before the Predator and Bane did. Geez his shattered pride is fully on display here. "I'm the Alpha! I'm never the beta unless Superman is around!"
But I digress we get little moments here and there sprinkled across the issue with Cass not enjoying being the third wheel.
It's when she's quiet. That's when you better start praying to whatever higher power you believe in.
