#mermay2020 day 14, Algizᛉ, referred to as the elk. The elk is a symbol of strength, nurturing protection. An old English poem goes, "The Elk-sedge usually lives in the fen, growing in the water. It wounds severely, staining with blood any man who makes a grab at it." #procreate

#mermay2020 day11, Isaz ᛁ, ice. Ice is referred to in old Icelandic poetry as the bark of rivers, the roofs of waves. Ice is primordial. Ymir the frost giant was slain by his grandsons, Óðinn and his brothers, and they used his corpse to fashion our world.

and cliff-dweller
and husband of a giantess
Njörðr's (Saturn's) thegn." From the body of one, Ymir, our world was also created.
#mermay2020 day 2 catchup, Ūrą or Ūruz (ᚢ). Described as the rain or the aurochs respectively, an old English poem goes, "The aurochs is proud and has great horns; it is a very savage beast and fights with its horns; a great ranger of the moors, it is a creature of mettle."
#mermay2020 Day 1 (catchup posting) I decided to base them off the Elder Futhark runes. First is Fehu. Based on an old Icelandic poem, “wealth is a source of discord amongst kin, and fire of the sea, and path of the serpent.”

The Reaper, after Van Gogh. Day 5 study. Van Gogh painted this, inspired by Jean-François Millet's The Reaper. He often wrote praise about Millet and studied from his works. Struggled with this sketch, very out of sorts today.
