The idea for this Dragon's Maze Key Art was to have a labyrinth feel to the city with Ral Zarek overlooking. Later on, the AD asked if I could paint out Ral so it could be used as a Land card as well! Lucky for me, I had already partially painted the buildings behind him.

Ral was originally described to me as a thrillseeker and a daredevil. It was an interesting challenge to design him within the confines of the Izzet’s bright color schemes and wacky inventions. I wanted sometime a little darker and sinister for him.

I kept both Mirran Crusader and Phyrexian Crusader up on the screen next to each other, bouncing back and forth to work on them simultaneously. The idea was that they are opposite reflections of each other.
