Travelling through shoujo manga wonderland, the non-mainstream fringes & josei manga/seinen manga territories. Eyes always open to everything in its periphery.
Hidaka Shōko’s Hi ni Nagarete Hashi ni Iku moved from defunct YOU to Cookie & tells the story of Edo-era store Mitsuboshi which finds itself in need of modernisation during the early Meiji period. Gorgeous art, great story inspired by department store Mitsukoshi in Nihonbashi.
Mikuri & Hiramasa finally return in Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (The Full-Time Wife Escapist) by Umino Tsunami - in Kiss #3, out now. Also back: time slip drama Sekai de Ichiban Hayai Haru by Kawabata Shiki. Vol. 2 of her series Boku no Orion is in stores today, too 💫
In 2007, Delcourt published them as La Voix des Fleurs & Un Destin Clément in French with the covers of the first Japanese editions (followed by other titles by Sumeragi Natsuki) but they appear to be out of print :(
Blossoms in the cold: in Yuki Madoka's 2-vol. fantasy action series Sakuteishi no Ichizoku - Guardian of the Garden, fate (??) brings together the heirs of 2 ancient clans, Hinata & Oboro, a mysterious onmyōji-like master of the garden with the ability to turn decay into life🥀🌷
Here are the 2 shōjo manga winners of the 64th Shogakukan Manga Award 🎊
Children’s category: 12-sai by Maita Nao (Shogakukan, running in Ciao).
Girls' category: Suteki na Kareshi by Kawahara Kazune (Shueisha, in Bessatsu Margaret).
Besides CLAMP's X, there's another hiatus-ridden ASUKA manga that started in the 90s: Sugisaki Yukiru's D.N.Angel. Daisuke and Dark Mousy are still alive, though. Vol. 16 comes out digitally on Jan 24, 8 years after vol. 15. Info on the paper edition TBA in ASUKA #4 (out Feb 23).
Sadly, most of Haruno Nanae’s older works are OOP. (I bought a lot of them used 💸) Her newer stuff (late 90s onwards) is available digitally: Double House about a trans woman & a rich girl, the yuri classic Pietà & Pantheon about the complicated relationship between 2 siblings.
Here to chase away the winter blues: Yamashita Tomoko’s Ikoku Nikki on the colorful cover of Feel Young #2. Also has lovely color pages for tamekou’s Genderless Danshi & Kichijitsugoyomi, the wedding planner series by Iwaoka Hisae (Saturn Apartments, Koshoku Robot) 🌼🕊️
Margaret #3-4 features a whole ensemble of male characters on its double issue all-star cover. The mag is going on its annual new year's break but is offering 624 pgs of romance shoujo manga incl. Nanaji Nagamu's Futsū no Koiko-chan to tide readers over until issue #5, out Feb 5.
Banana Fish fans all over Japan are clearing 49x32 cm of wall space for the Ash dawn poster Flowers #2 2019. The magazine is also celebrating Nishi Keiko's 30th pro mangaka anniversary. Flowers #3 will come with a very instagramable/meme-ready Ash & Eiji 2-shot clear frame 🏙️😅
