i hope the next touhou symposium book will feature a meeting between both ideologically transcended characters
W. G. Lambert's Babylonian Creation Myths (p. 245) mentions a wacky explanatory text (which doesn't make much sense in context either) according to which Tiamat had 4 eyes - much like Kaneko's design. Coincidence or influence?
learned about a danish comic about bronze age mediterranean earlier and now i really wish i could read it...
The kanekocribs blog pointed out Apsu's arms are based on a syro-hittite figure of Ishtar, but honestly his whole design seems like it's based on uncanny syro-hittite sculptures
@Kamo_Pasta Imo it was his peak both in terms of artwork and the scope of his work, DS/SH added demons from what, two dozen new mythologies? On top of no longer having recolors - so even the low level demons are unique and memorable
It seems Terajima Ryōan claimed yamawaro is derived from similar Chinese creatures, so you can by a stretch pretend yamawaro and shan xiao are distantly related, though it seems yamawaro's origin was entirely eclipsed by the idea that it's a kappa which periodically leaves water
Kaneko's yamawaro is pretty clearly based on Sekien's artwork, but the color scheme comes from other night parade scrolls instead
