And now, we add a Glow layer. I've decided that these guy's heads all have a glow on the edge of their masky bits. Honestly I just come in with an airbrush and my watercolor brush I use for a lot of my work in my drawings.

After this, I add edge lighting from that glow.

Nice face. Just adding color helps imply shapes that are not naturally but in there.

While I'm using similar tones to the others' cloaks, I've been tuning them to each mech. While they may use the same paint and parts, the animals they hunt aren't uniform.

The Assault is mostly covered by his cape, but the Hornet has way too much of this light color in the design. So let's steal that secondary color off the Bastion (added for the same reason) and also make the weapons bright and easy to see for players.

Adding just one layer, you can see the mech pop already. Patterns like the toes being light but the rest of the foot is dark is consistent with the last two mechs. Even little things like that really help solidify the feeling these guys work together.

Also, at the point I do color, I do double the size of the token. It lets me get all those tasty details in people love!

I start with this dark brown I use to fill shaodws and be all the mechanical bits of the mech. If you're used to model painting, it's a base coat.

As a point. That Assault?

Yes, there's a glow layer in for how the head light works, but for the most part, you can see how the colors apply.

Also, doing this means I can now use this ugly blob layer as a grab point for colours to make all their armor match!

I I added that fur lining and then stopped here originally to go type up this thread. But now that I'm back to the image, I find little changes I want to make.
The cape gets a little close to that left leg, so I trim it back a bit. Also a few other little tweaks.

Now, color!

"But Kos, what about the cape?!"
You're right, I forgot. I should have done it before now, but instead, here's just some progress shots.

Start with a cool dark shape THAT DOESN'T FUCK TOO MUCH WITH THE SILHOUETTE PLEASE GODS DON'T MESS UP THOSE SHAPES NOW!

And then build up.

Onto prepping for colouring! I try to stick to Retro's own palette when doing my chopshopping to do my best to stay consistent with his style.

But now, it's time to out the Level Correction tool. My sliders generally end up looking like this. And here's the result.

So here we are. The mech, at this point, could be called done. It already looks fine in a line up with other Retro tokens.

And hey, remember that right arm that I said looked janky? You forgot right? Probably didn't notice until I brought it up again?

Artists. Internalize this.
