Another Character that keeps an initial design is Link. Prior to BoTW, Link wore a green tunic and green cap in every game. In fact the change of design in BoTW was so jarring that at first PEOPLR WERE QUESTIONING IF IT WAS LINK AT ALL. This shows how important iconicism can be!

Shiroe from Log Horizon actually changes gear in the second season of the anime, but it's similar to the original and has the same color. This is done to freshen his look up while keeping his initial design looking Iconic.

Okay so I realized I forgot something. And that's CHARACTER CONTRAST. Kirito's color scheme is black and blue, Asuna's color scheme is white and red. By COLOR ALONE they contrast almost PERFECTLY.

Why all black? Simple. Black is a color that avoids attention. And while Kirito's not quite SHADY, he's definitely the person who avoids drawing attention. And honestly, his coat has a HIDING bonus. Making it easier on him.
